Yurina Roche is a mixed-media artist; graphic designer, sculptor, painter, printmaker, and embroiderer. Roche uses the themes of Identity, intersecting cultures, and assimilation as a platform for dialogue of her works. She introduces the complexity of attempting identity through creating works that highlight the process of art making. The experience of creating art is tied to a historical and cultural context in order to feel a kinship with the traditional forms of arts and crafts from her Japanese, Chinese, and American upbringing. Having been brought up by her Japanese mother and American father, her work reflects her influence from both cultures, especially with the stripped down Japanese aesthetic. Balance is also another theme throughout her works, as self identity is difficult to find when there are two conflicting cultural influences. Roche’s work operates by the philosophy that balance between these two cultures were a necessity growing up, and her fight to find an inner balance in chaos.
Yurina has a Bachelors of Arts in Fine Arts with a focus on Design and Printmaking, and a second Bachelors of Arts in East Asian Language and Culture from the University of Southern California. She is currently getting her Masters in Art Business at the Sotheby's Institute of Art in New York.
